The 15th century was a time of profound changes - it witnessed the advent of the Renaissance era.
The face of the world was changed dramatically by the discoveries of Spanish and Portuguese sailors, literacy was starting to become more widespread, power relationships were redefined.

Gutenberg's invention of a printing press with movable types was cause and result at the same time: Increase of literacy heightened the demand for affordable books, while the process of printing facilitated access to knowledge and answered the growing demand for cheap and rapid book production.
