Günther Grass (1927 - )

Günther Grass is a recent Nobel laureate - in 1999 he received the coveted award for "frolicsome black fables" which "portrays the forgotten face of history."
In 1959, his novel 'The Tin Drum' ('Die Blechtrommel'), a highly allegorical account of Nazi Germany, earnt him an international reputation and is part of the Danzig trilogy.

Grass has always been politically active, siding with Germany's social democrats and Willy Brandt and believing in the responsibility of intellectuals.
