German Architecture
Germany is famous for its many castles, splendid cathedrals
and stately city halls. Over the centuries a multitude
of regional varieties and styles - gothic, renaissance, baroque
and classic - have contributed to Germany's unique appearance.
bear in mind that not only the Neuschwanstein castle
and Colognes twin-spired cathedral are worth a visit. At its
best modern German architecture is spectacular, and enthralling.
The 20th century has seen German architecture be transported
around the world. The clear lines of 'Neue Sachlichkeit' and
Bauhaus excerted a strong influence on architecture
in the United States and moulded a new international style.
The invention of reinforced concrete offered a world of possibilities
to adventurous architects like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
und Walter Gropius.
